I can barely recall fragments of those frosty winter days, with snow as deep as it was back then. It was my first school vacation, back in my childhood village with my grandparents. I was just a boy, taking my first steps in life, unaware that a great storm of change would soon sweep over the country.
I remember sitting by the stove, listening to an old radio reporting the street fights across the nation. Outside, I built a snowman with charcoal eyes and a carrot nose. I recall the old village cooperative store—its high ground floor and worn wooden counters—seeming like a paradise from another world. That winter, I tasted oranges and chocolate for the first time, treasures that I carefully kept on our old dresser, their scents forever imprinted in my memory.
