This is the essence of the poem that captures the mermaid’s love in “Phra-apaimanee,” a 1,200-page masterpiece penned by the illustrious poet, “Phra Soonthornvoharn,” also known as “Soonthorn Pu,” of the Rattanakosin Kingdom.

In the novel, a mermaid is depicted as a creature with the upper body of a beautiful woman and the lower body of a fish. She dwells in the ocean with her family but tragically loses them while saving Phra-apaimanee from the onslaught of the Ocean Butterfly Giant. The mermaid and Phra-apaimanee find refuge on an island called “Koh Keaw Pitsadarn,” where they fall in love and have a son together.

Eventually, Phra-apaimanee departs from the mermaid to explore the world. Left alone, she gives birth to a human boy—a child she cannot raise, as her home is in the ocean. Desperate for help, the mermaid entrusts her son to a wise ascetic, seeking his assistance in raising the child.
